"Okay, Kakeru, calm down. He's not at fault here." Claudia said, approaching slowly. The voice began speaking for a moment before Claudia added onto her statement. "Directly." "If a cellphone malfunctions and harms someone due to a freak accident, do you blame the manufacturer for the accident having happened in the first place?" The voice inquired.

Kakeru sighed, the flames slacking a bit, but not dispersing entirely. "Fine. Explain. Then I'll decide if I roast these ugly fucks."

"I wished to see if I could create a parasitic form of artificial life, a homunculus that fed on others to live. Parasitism was the only way I could feasibly continually fuel a homunculus. However, it went wrong." The voice explained. "It attacked me, nearly killing me, before escaping. It went out into the world and began to self-replicate, creating what you and I know as the Parassita. In these past few decades, I've been working on a new species to battle the Parassita, and I've found success with the Gatherers you see assembled here. There are three other varieties, one still being tested, but these are what I offer as oppostion to the horror I unleashed on the world by accident."

"So you fight horror with horror. And what becomes of these Gatherers when the Parassita are no more?" He glared at the monitor, his barely-contained rage evident.

"They will be discarded. They cannot self-replicate like the Parassita, so they won't become a similar threat once the Parassita vanish." The voice replied.

"Discarded. Right. And how, pray-tell, did you create these monstrosities?" He snarled.

"Genetic modification of lab-grown humans." The voice replied simply.

Kakeru growled, the flames intensifying. "So, you toyed around with human lives to make your little pets?"

Suddenly, Claudia was standing between Kakeru and the monitor, clad in Dame Frappe par l'Amour and brandishing the hammer. "Kakeru, there is no point in just going insane." "This is war. Sacrifices must be made." The voice stated.

Kakeru growled, but lowered his blade. "Claudia...why stop me? These monsters...were human. This bastard...changed them. We have to end their misery."

"He said they were grown in a lab. They haven't had another meaning to their lives. They have nothing to compare the experience they have as a Gatherer against." Claudia said. "Besides, they haven't really done anything to us. Hell, they just might be on our side."

Kakeru sighed, putting away his sword as the flames subsided, his armor dissipating shortly after. "Fine, fine. I'm calm. Enough, at least."

"Now that we're all behaving like civilized humans, I presume you two will help me in my... crusade, if you will." "Against the Parassita?" Claudia asked, dismissing her own armor.

"I don't know if I'd call you human, but whatever. How about you show us your face before asking favors?" Kakeru growled, still not happy about the situation whatsoever.

"I have a reasonable fear for my personal safety, so I'm afraid I can't do that. I can, however, offer a gift." The voice said, as one of the Gatherers stepped forward, holding out a perfectly spherical object. In the mostly dark room, they could see it glowed softly.
