"Well, I already assume what you're doing is magic, so I'd believe it," she said.

"That's not real magic," he insisted. What the hell? She already thought he was using real spells anyway. "But if you want I can show you a few real spells." He wasn't as fond of them himself but in a sense Rui-chan was the opposite of him. She was raised in the mundane world so she craved the magical and inexplicable.

"Wait, really?" she asked him, "You can do real magic?" her excitement was rising. She wanted to see this, she wanted to know what magic really was like.

He nodded his head. "But you can't tell anyone, okay? It's supposed to be a secret!" "Jun, what are you doing?" Uriel asked. "It's a complicated situation. I planned on explaining everything at some point anyway. Might as well start now."
Jun held out his arm so that Rui-chan could better see his sentient Gothic looking bracelet, partner. "This is my partner, Uriel," he explained. "He helps me with a lot of things."

"A partner?" she asked, "Your...bracelet is your partner?" she asked. She'd heard it talk to him, "So...it's magic?"

"He's not a bracelet," Jun said after laughing. "He's a Madogu. I don't think he'd appreciate being lumped in with ordinary jewelry. His name is Uriel. And...I don't...Are you magic, Uriel? You seem to have certain magical abilities."
"Interesting. You've never cared to ask before." "Yeah, well you know how I feel about questions when I'm off the clock," Jun quipped.

"A Madagou?" she asked, "What's that?" Well, he looked like a bracelet...a magical bracelet, but a bracelet none the less.

"Right, okay. Bare with me here. I haven't really explained this before." He gazed up the sky for a minute, trying to think of how to best put it.
"Okay, well I can only use spells because I was born into a family that has certain responsibilities. These families sometimes have what's known as a Madagou. They're sentient jewelry that act as advisers and trainers. Uriel helps me fulfill my obligations."

She nodded. Ok, this was weird, but so far this was easy to follow at least. She wanted to know more.

He saw that Rui-chan was looking at him expectantly, hoping he'd explain more. Why the hell not? He always did think it was best to explain as much as possible at once. Get it out of the way and over with.
"Right. Okay then. Uriel's greatest help is that he can detect these monsters called Horrors. Horrors are demons that are attracted to the darkness in human beings. They attach to human beings with this darkness and basically possess them. Then they devour other people. It's been my family's responsibility for a long time to slay Horrors. Uriel helps me find them and gives me guidance as to how to defeat them."
Jun looked down at Uriel. "And Uriel feel free to help me out with the explanation any time you want." "Adviser? I like the sound of that." "Does that mean you're not going to help me?" "You said you'd take responsibility, right?" "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" "I said no such thing."

"So you're...you're here to fight these Horror things?" she asked. This made him a hero? That was pretty amazing! She felt a lot better inviting him already, assuming this was true. Why wouldn't it be, though? He had a talking magical bracelet thing. But...then again, not everyone might be good. But she believed him, believed in him.

Jun nodded his head. "Yes, that's why I'm here." He showed her what looked at the moment to be an ordinary staff. He pressed a switch and the spear blade popped out. "This is what I fight them with," he explained.
Then he showed her his MadÅ Lighter. "This can confirm who a Horror's possessed. Well I also use it to open orders." He thought Rui-chan was taking everything pretty well.

"Are they dangerous?" she asked, "The Horrors that you fight? Is it hard to fight them? To protect people?"

Jun grew serious, quite the rarity for him. "They're very dangerous," he said gravely. "How dangerous they are depends a lot on the Horror and the Makai Knight fighting them. But to normal humans...They really don't stand a chance," he said sadly.
He took a deep breath. "We try to kill them quickly before they can devour a lot of people but it's pretty much impossible to get to them before they feed at least a couple times. And of course the person the Horror possessed is a goner."

"Is...is Vol City relatively safe?" she asked, "Or...should we all be afraid?"
