He looked at Rui-chan seriously. "Do you want me to be honest or do you want me to make you feel better?"

"Well...that already makes it sound bad, so be honest," she said, "Honesty will get me somewhere, nothing else will."

"I just got here today so I don't know the details. But I know that knights only get summoned to another district if things are bad and I wasn't the only one summoned. So yeah...Things are really bad."

She looked down, "Oh...," she said, voice depressed. She looked at Jun, small smile forming on her face, "Well, I'm sure you'll be able to do a good job here."

That confidence really wasn't deserved. He had no idea what the situation was here. But apparently the Order had been having major problems recently. Some sort of revolution. So they'd likely have to contend with facing other knights, priests, and priestesses in addition to Horrors. And tonight he'd already let three people be devoured in front of him. And he'd let Rui-chan be tainted. Yeah...Not a promising start.
But he wasn't about to voice that. Rui-chan looked upset and it was a knight's job to bring the innocents comfort. And he really hated to see her wear that expression. It didn't suit her.
He motioned to the some rocks on the grounds and made them levitate. "This is real magic," he told Rui-chan, hoping it would cheer her up. He laughed. "Maybe less flashy than my parlor tricks but I can throw things at Horrors when my hands are busy with my spear."

She watched and gave a small smile, "I prefer your parlor tricks," she told him.

"I do too," he said sincerely. He tried to think of a trick that could get her to relax a bit. Well she liked flowers and he still had plenty of roses left. Then he changed his mind.
He slowed his pace and gently touched her shoulder, bending down a bit so he could look her directly in the eyes. "Rui-chan, I'm going to do everything I can to protect you. So try not to be too scared."
Before he removed his hand, he pulled a rose out of her sleeve. He held it out to her.

She stared back into his eyes, and gave him a single nod of acknowledgement. She believed in him, she believed that he could help protect her and the rest of the city. She smiled and graciously accepted the rose.

What the hell was he doing? What good did briefly protecting her do? He was going to have to kill her in 100 days. He certainly wanted her to last that long but wasn't this sort of deceptive?
Dealing with Horrors was much easier when other humans weren't around. You didn't need to really think about the consequences of your actions. You could just kill and go home and do whatever the hell you wanted. It was always a different game when there were actually people there. When you actually saw what Horrors did to others...No, Jun didn't like that. He just wanted to get his work done as swiftly as possible. He didn't want to worry about what had happened to those the Horror had gotten to before he arrived or the other people Horrors would hurt before he found them. You'd go insane if you thought that way.
"I'm sorry, Rui-chan. I probably shouldn't have told you. It was tempting. Few people are as open minded as you and we're typically supposed to be really secretive."

"Don't worry," she said, her tone dropping to a softer one, "I won't tell anyone. It'll be a secret that stays with me." That was true; who would believe her if she told anyone? What would she have to gain from it, even? He was a nice guy, and he had trusted her with this secret, so of course she would keep it. She was just happy to have the truth, even if the truth came off as so dark and morbid.

"No, I didn't mean it like that. I can tell you're a good person. I know you wouldn't tell anyone. I just meant that maybe it was unfair of me to make you worry."
How exactly did he know she was a good person? His great people skills? His great social experience? Yeah right. And trusting your gut was just stupid. But he firmly believed for some reason that she wouldn't try and tell. Although even if she did people would just think she was crazy. It was of little consequence.

"No, it's fine," she told him, "I might be a little worried, but...I also feel safer. There's monsters in the world, and it's nice to know that we're not in the ideal town we all think we're in. Now I at least know some of the truth, and...and I know to be careful."

All things considered she was coping really well. "I'll stay near you as much as possible," he promised. "I'll need to go take care of Horror threats and stuff but I'll give you my phone number so you can call me if anything happens while I'm away." Not like that would do much good. If she was attacked by a Horror and he wasn't there she'd likely be dead before he could make it back. But maybe it would make Rui-chan feel slightly safer.
He looked down at Uriel. "And maybe my partner knows a better way to find you." She had Horror blood. Uriel could detect Horrors. Maybe there was something he could do to keep track of Rui-chan.
"Is that another question off hours?" Uriel asked. "You're enjoying this way too much." "Do you know how many questions you've ever asked me 'off hours' before today?" "It was plural?" Jun questioned "Exactly."

She smiled, "I'd like that," she said. It would be good to be able to contact him if need be, but she hoped she'd never have to use it. Watching him communicate with Uriel was becoming amusing.

"I'll make sure to give it to you as soon as we make it home." Was it his home? He supposed it was at least temporarily. He turned his attention back to Uriel.
"So are you going to actually answer my question or just sit their smirking?" "I wasn't aware a MadÅgu could smirk." "Probably not but I'm your partner. I've been with you for how many years now? If you had a human face you'd be smirking." "Now are these years on or off the clock?"
