Of course. That was about as specific as he could have hoped for with Rui-chan. "I'll try not to disappoint you," he said a bit nervously.
He waited until Rui-chan left before he started cooking. He'd never been able to cook in front of anyone before. It felt too much like he was being scrutinized.
He planned out the meal, giving Uriel a chance to make Rui-chan's bracelet. He was surprised at how fast it was prepared.
Jun wasn't beyond asking Uriel for advice in terms of cooking. Uriel had watched many people cook before. Eventually the chicken, rice, and miso soup were done. And he made his special pudding that had always so delighted his younger sister. He was at the very least confident in the pudding.
He set the table and called Rui-chan for dinner. He hoped the meal would at least be acceptable.

Rui came back in happily and looked at what he had made. She looked at him with a smile, "It all looks wonderful," she told him, "I'm sure it'll be good!"

"Thank you," he said nervously. He wouldn't relax until she tried it. He wasn't that amazing of a cook. He wasn't that picky with his food. He made what was easy and convenient. But he knew enough and he hadn't picked difficult dishes and Uriel had given him some tips. Hopefully it would be alright. "Oh before that, Uriel made the bracelet. Please put it on," he said, holding it out to her. He'd feel better when she was wearing it. Rui-chan was a Horror magnet now. Things would go much more smoothly if Uriel could track her. (Bracelet looks like this unless you have another image you'd prefer in which case please link it.)

Looks fine to me.
She sat down and looked at the bracelet, "It's very pretty," she said, sliding it onto her wrist. She looked at the food before her and took up some of the rice and then a little soup, "It's delicious!" she told Jun. She tried some chicken and smiled, "You're a wonderful cook!"

(Awesome! Thanks. It was a bit difficult to find something acceptable.)
"Glad you appreciate my work," Uriel said, pleased. Well at least that was taken care of. Helping Rui-chan stay safe would be considerably easier now although still no simple feat.
Jun tensed up as she took a few bites and then he relaxed when she praised him. He grinned. "Well...I'd say competent but I'm glad you like it."
He finally allowed himself to taste his cooking. Well it was much better than what he usually made. "Thank you, Uriel," he whispered, wondering just how much Uriel's tips had saved him. It would have been edible without Uriel for sure but it was probably a lot better this way.

As she ate she looked to him, "Um...so, what are your days going to be like?" she asked, "Are you going to just go out and...fight these Horrors?" she asked.

"Fighting Horrors is typically more of a night thing," Jun explained. "Horrors usually hunt at night. The daytime might be used to try and locate Horrors or anything they've tampered with but aside from training we're more or less free in the day."
He grimaced. "And by more or less I mean much less. Training is really important and takes up a lot of time." "Don't let it bother you, Rui-chan. He's always like this." "I'm sorry if I'm not thrilled to tears about structuring my whole life around something I had no say in." "You never did try and run away." "A Makai Knight, running? No, that's not the way. I know enough not to skirt my responsibilities. I don't want to be bring shame to the Yamagatana name either but that doesn't mean I have to wake up every morning shouting 'Yeah! I get to sacrifice everything to fight monsters!' I do what's necessary and what's expected. That should be enough."

She nodded and listened. She didn't know what to say sometimes, she just wanted to listen to some of these conversations and get a feel for how they spoke to each other, and how Jun lived.

"I'm not the one who said it wasn't enough," Uriel said gently. "Yes, I certainly wish you were more driven but for the most part you complete your training and assignments without incident. I just occasionally have to remind you of how orders are meant to be interpreted. For instance, we seem to have very different ideas on what 'as soon as possible' means."
Jun grinned. "Yes, well when you nag me too much I know how to get you to shut up." "You really do attract plenty of attention with your magic tricks," Uriel acknowledged before growing serious. "And Jun...It's been enough until now but it won't always be that way. One day you'll have to give more. But I believe you'll do what's necessary at the time."
Jun said nothing to that and instead focused on his food. He supposed he wouldn't have a choice at that time.

"I'm sure you'll be fine when that time comes," Rui interjected, "I'm with Uriel on that. You can do great things, I'm sure of it."

"What makes you so sure, Rui-chan?" he asked softly. She couldn't be certain. To her knowledge, she'd never seen him fight. Although if she remembered she would be saying something really different. She'd still be screaming at him, rightly blaming him for her family's death.
He was a bit surprised that even now Rui-chan was trying to encourage him. She wasn't scolding him for his lack of dedication. He'd been sure she'd be horrified and disgusted with his miniscule amount of motivation. He'd expected her to shun him to some extent, deeming him cold and cruel.

She just smiled, "I see it in you. That's all; I just see your ability to do good, and...well, I have a lot of confidence in you," she told him.

Jun laughed nervously. "I really prefer working with low expectations but I'll try to live up to your misplaced confidence." "Don't listen to him, Rui. His father's methods were a bit strict so he confuses not being able to protect everyone with not being any good."

"Not being able to protect everyone?" she asked. Had something happened?

Jun tensed up and glared Uriel. "My father's way is not my own. I saw what it did to him. I knew I couldn't live like that."
He turned back to Rui-chan. "For a Horror to even be born in this world one life is already lost. And it will feed on many more before most knights can get to it. We know this and if we're smart we accept this. Sometimes we can't even save people right in front of us when we fight it. That's just the way it is." His voice was much harsher than he would have liked.
"But my father didn't see it that way. He was driven which was good but he dwelled on every person he couldn't protect, cursing his weakness for not being able to save them. It ate him alive and he lived in hell. He was amazing but I knew I couldn't live that way."
