"But someday we'll have to lay down our weapons and live what's left of our lives. Or die in the field...," she added the last part more quietly.

Erika couldn't break the habit. She still smiled but she at least made it look sad. "It's the same either way. I don't think people like us could adapt to laying down our weapons. This thing we do..It's a part of us. We'd be lost without it. If we don't physically die our spirits will be lost and broken."
She felt like she'd been too honest. She awkwardly held out her box of cookies. "Cookie?" she asked brightly, smile back to its typical cheerful self.

She held her hand out, "No, one's fine for now. But there will be a time when for whatever reason we're no longer able to fight, whether we grow old or broken, and then we have life to go through."

"I wouldn't know what to do," she said scared. What if she still had the visions but wasn't able to do anything about them? What would she do then?

"Well, we both have more life to live. We'll figure things out," she said.

"People like us don't have a future. We exist to preserve humanity's future." Even if they lived past fighting age they'd have nothing. Nothing but terror. How could they function in normal society after everything they'd been through? When they would actually have the chance to plan their future and build one it would be too late. All opportunities would be long past gone. Nothingness would await them. Maybe that was their penance for killing sentient creatures.

"And eventually we pass our mantles onto another," she told Erika, "It's not our duty forever. What use are we, old and weak, when there are young, strong warriors out there who can take our places?" she questioned.

"We give everything and when we can give no more we curse a new generation," she said in a cheerful tone. She sounded like she was discussing pastries and her smile reflected that. Even when she could speak somewhat honestly she couldn't allow her real tone to trickle through. Not unless she lost it.

"Sadly, that's the fate of the world," Sierra said. She had come to grips with the truth a long time ago, and as sad as it was, it was how things worked.

Erika smiled, relieved. She was glad Sierra-chan didn't try to deny it. "Yes, that's just the way it is," she said with some level of solemness.

"We give our lives so that others can live full lives," she said.

Erika shook her head. "I'm not trying to sound ungrateful. I'm glad I can help people. I want to help people but sometimes..." She broke off, shaking her head again. "It's been a really bad day," she admitted. "I'm sorry," she apologized.

"No need to apologize," she told Erika, "I understand completely. I'll do what I can to help you though that too."

"I'm too gloomy," she said in a singsong voice. "It's not my style!" Well, at least not to show it. On the inside she was often depressed and melancholic.
