Overview: If a little goofy, Motoki is very optimistic. He's very fond of Kamekichi, and will do anything for him. He believes that needs to be a hard worker in order to get by, so he puts a lot of effort into his work. Granted, this leaves him practically exhausted by closing time.

When he transforms into Ultraman Cosmos, the Ultraman's own personality takes over. In Luna Mode, Cosmos becomes more calm and relaxed, taking on zen-like principles. In Corona Mode, he becomes more aggressive and irritable, always itching for a fight and wanting to destroy rather than save a monster. In Eclipse Mode, Motoki's personality takes over again and he gains control of the Ultra body.

Motoki had a pretty average life, being the son of a famous chef and a social worker. That is, until he was 8, when, while exploring a forest, he came across a giant. A blue Ultraman had landed on Earth, and had run out of power. Motoki managed to reflect sunlight onto the giant, who returned to full power. The giant gave Motoki a short ride on its hand over Tokyo, before landing in the forest again, and gave Motoki a blue gemstone that, the giant said, contained its power and that the giant could be summoned with it.

Over the years, through high school, college and university, Motoki only used the gem a total of three times. Once, to heal a rampaging monster, once again to fight a monster that couldn't be cured, and another time to return a meteor back into space. Post university, and getting a graduation present in the form of Kamekichi, Motoki got a job in the Karaoke Crown karaoke bar, where he also lived until he could get on his feet.

Motoki eventually became the sole employee of Karaoke Crown, after everyone who worked there left and got better jobs. He wasn't really able to cope with that amount of work, and temporarily closed the bar. While walking in the same forest he found the giant, the giant appeared again, and took his blue gem, placing it in the Cosmos Pluck and giving it to Motoki. The giant explained to Motoki how the Ultra possession worked and that Motoki had been chosen as the Ultraman's host. Motoki consented, and the Ultra entered the blue gem. Motoki now had the power of the Ultraman in his hands, literally.
