Lauren was born in Pasadena, and her parents moved to Paris when she was 3. So she barely remembers anything of America, and grew up as an expat in Paris. She always liked art as a kid, but was never really into the traditional forms of art other than photography to a slight extent. She got into weaving later, and found she liked that to a larger extent, graduating to weaving with rope when she was 16. The sheer unique factor of using rope to weave tapestries immediately got her a small deal of fame, and she made many pieces over the next two years, selling them when she turned 18 to get the money to buy an apartment in Paris.
While living in Paris, she got a part-time job at a pet store to help pay her bills until her art really took off. While walking home one evening, she found Gao Tiger's Jewel. She felt a strange power emanating from it, and then Gao Tiger appeared before her. She explained how Lauren was her partner, and gave her her Phone and Juuohken. After that, Lauren began training in martial arts, figuring it might be good to know martial arts.
After a few years, she managed to sell a few pieces and earn a decent profit, quitting her job to work at her art full-time. She's still doing that now. Being unemployed gives her time to work on her martial arts as well.
