Owen Macleod, son of the rich man Angus Macleod, was born in a small room in Macleod Manor on the shores of Loch Shiel in the Highlands. Life was good to him, and he had everything he could ever want. Yet he was bored of it. The riches of the world couldn’t satisfy him, so he turned his mind to books. Books were his greatest friend. They distracted him from the conflict and dissent of the real world.

Time moved on, and Macleod was soon grown into a young man with ideas of his own. As soon as possible, he left the Highlands and journeyed south, to Spain, where he lived for a few years as something of a recluse. He owned a tiny house in a fishing village, and barely ever emerged from it. One time, when he was out of the house, he got drunk, as in really really Boris Berezovsky level drunk, and collapsed in the middle of the street. He was taken in by an old man called Villa-Lobos Ramirez, who nursed him back to sobriety.

Macleod found that Ramirez had many little nuggets of wisdom to share. He found himself drawn to the strange old man, regarding him as a mentor of sorts. Following his encounter with him, Ramirez visited Macleod in his lodgings to give him a gift: an Advent Deck. Ramirez expressed his wish for Macleod to find meaning in life. Macleod never saw Ramirez after that day. He was, however, inspired by Ramirez’ teachings and gift to him, taking the Advent Deck, and a fair share of his father’s fortune to a far and distant land…or just New York, setting up a business dealing antiques.
