Overview:

Arata is loner but this is due to his occupation and heritage as opposed to actual choice.  He grew up learning about the world of Horrors.  A world few others knew anything about  He was forbidden to speak of it and even if he chose to tell others, who would believe him? His secrets would have been enough to isolate him but there was also a matter of his training. He was home schooled so he could spend more time training to deal with the Horror threat. He was rarely allowed outside the training ground premises.  Therefore he little experience socializing with anyone outside of his family.  And he stuck out like a sore thumb with his blond hair and blue eyes in Japan.

He has isolated himself from the people best capable of sparing him from his solitude, the majority of Makai Order members.  He finds some of their laws to be cruelly apathetic at best and unjust as worst and he's incapable of keeping these opinions to himself.  As he has brazenly expresses his viewpoints, wishing for a change in the laws, he has been labeled as a trouble maker and rebel rouser despite his best intentions.

Arata is an interesting mix of cool and collected and passionate.  He is very passionate about protecting others and destroying Horrors.  However, for the most part he tries to  be cool and collected. He wishes to get outside his head so to speak so that he can gauge situations objectively and determine the best course of action. In his cool and collected state he is very rational, methodical, and ingenuitive.  However, he can be easily riled up when he witnesses cruelty. He may lose his temper and respond with loud screaming or even outright violence.

He is far too trusting of other people. He always wants to believe in the best of everyone.  He tends to believe what people say even if there is reason to be suspicious.  He wants to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

He is a very friendly sort unless you comment on the fact that he doesn't look Japanese or mention his mixed heritage.  In which case, he'll become incredibly defensive and a bit angry.

He correctly feels that his life style is tailored around his Makai Knight work. As such, he feels in some ways that he is missing out on experiences and not fully living in this world.  He copes with these anxious feelings by taking a lot of pictures when he has the time.  (He carries a camera with him everywhere.)  For example, he'll take pictures of a university and imagine that he went there, was a part of it.

He would give his life for the Makai Order. He can't simply stand by when others are suffering.  He will do whatever is necessary to take out Horrors and make the world a better place for everyone.

Arata was raised as the replacement. Nothing was more important to the Kusugami clan than inheriting the Gai armor and protecting the world from Horrors.  However, Arata was the younger son.  And not simply the younger son; but, the son who did not have a purely Japanese heritage.  His father's first wife had died giving birth to Arata's half-brother Gorou.  It was always known that Gorou would inherit.  His father got married again and Arata was born.  Arata, three years younger than Gorou, was still trained to inherit.  It was known that he would not unless something dreadful would happen to Gorou. However, it was unthinkable to his father that a male from the clan not be appropriately trained. He was the back up plan, the second in command.  Arata was more enthusiastic about attempting to protect the innocent but his father favored tradition.  And traditionally, the oldest son inherited.  Arata worked hard to impress his father and due to his motivation, drive, and strenuous extra practice he outshone his brother in skill. It didn't matter.  He was never going to be anything but the possible replacement.

Arata, accepting his fate, still wished to help. He experimented with magic and made the glasses.  He thought he could build things or think about solutions to Horror problems and help from the sidelines even if he was not allowed to fight.

His upbringing was far from warm.  His brother constantly harassed him for not being purely Japanese. It didn't help that he looked like an Englishman instead of a Japanese citizen. His brother wasn't the only one to tease him about this.  Basically everyone aside from his mother was difficult about the situation.  And he was essentially treated like a skilled extra. He was there in case his more coveted brother perished.  He was the echo, the shadow. Nothing he did really mattered.  His brother was the one with a future. His brother was the one being seriously evaluated.

Tradition was so important to his father and his brother that he grew to loathe it. He believed it blinded them.  They had a difficult time even considering the benefits of revising some of the Makai Order's rules.  And they were so proud of their heritage, a heritage Arata didn't quite share being of mixed blood.  Originally he was confused as to why someone so obsessed with tradition would even marry an English woman.  Then he realized that it was just another sign of how unimportant he was. His father had already married a proper Japanese wife and had a proper son who could inherit.  What happened after that was of little consequence.  In his father's eyes, he was of little consequence.

However, before his brother could inherit he was killed. Garou was killed by a Horror and so it was Arata who ended up inheriting the armor.  He trains and tries to protect as many people as possible. He goes along with the rules for the most part; but, he can't bring himself to do certain things like kill people tainted with Horror blood. He's given no small amount of grief for his lack of compliance in these matters. He also still tries to convince the order that inheritance should purely be merit based.  He's not succeeding and despite his good work is still often viewed as a trouble maker and rebel rouser.
