He laughed. "Some things are precious because you know they're just dreams. What about you Rui-chan, do you have any dreams?"

"Just to have a good life," she said.

"Very eloquent in its simplicity," he said approvingly. Again, he was hit by a wave of guilt. She wouldn't be able to have more than 100 days of a good life and likely it wouldn't be that good. She'd be targeted by Horrors again and again and eventually Jun would have to kill her. He really wasn't looking forward to that.
"Really, it's a nice dream. Too often people get caught up in the details and lose sight of the big picture."

"And do you have a big picture that you view?" she asked, out of sheer curiosity.

"I will slay many Horrors and be unable to save many people in the process and then one day I will die and my death will force this responsibility, this cruel burden, on someone else. That is all I know. That is all I have." There was no pity in his voice. It seemed quite cold and apathetic. That was simply the way it was.

"I'm sorry," she said softly, "But...but at least you could find people to make your life better? To help you get through it?"

Jun smiled sadly and shook his head. "It wouldn't be fair to them. I have to know about Horrors. I have to fight them. How can I ask someone to support me when I know how dangerous and depressing my work is? How can I ask someone to accept the fact that every day when I leave I might not come back? Yes, there are other people in the order. Other knights, priests, and priestesses who would understand and be able to accept this but still...They have their own responsibilities. It feels like it would be cruel to ask them for anything more."

"Well...you told me...," she said.

Jun laughed. "I probably shouldn't have but you were open minded and I'd never actually explained it to anyone before. I gave into temptation."
And she was different. He'd need to explain the seriousness of her situation later. He needed to see if there was anything she wanted him to take care of after her death. It was his responsibility to try and fulfill any last requests as her death was completely his fault.

"Well, maybe it's a start," she said, "Maybe I'll be the first of perhaps others you could tell."

Jun smiled. "You're not just 'the first'. You're Rui-chan, you know. I'm satisfied with that. Thank you for believing me. I didn't think I'd ever be able to tell anyone outside the Order. I wasn't supposed to but still...Thank you."

"You're welcome," she said, "And thank you for sharing this with me...it's...it's good to know."

Jun laughed. "Is it? I'd think it would be horrible to learn something like this." He certainly wished he could be ignorant to the world of Horrors.

"But don't you wish you didn't?" he pressed. "Don't you wish I'd kept my mouth shut?"
