"Semantics of words are really important. People manipulate and control others through it. I won't be deceived by fuzzy words. You probably don't even care about us as people. We're just tools to help you locate treasure."

"Of course I care," he told her, "Yes, this field is uncaring. I can go to some secluded corner of the Earth and look for treasures to my heart's content. But no, I'm here, with you guys, fighting with you guys, helping and being helped by you guys. Obviously I care," he told her.

Obviously he cared? Yeah, right. Everyone said that. There wasn't an obvious about affection ever. People wanted you for something and used you as far they could.
"The field isn't uncaring. The field is...It's not sentient so no messy emotions attached to it. Arguably more honest and sincere than people."

"What's with you?" he asked, "I'm trying to help you. Do you not want my help? Do you just want to let things be?"

"I'm trying to figure out your motivation. I don't get it," she said honestly. "I can't figure out how exactly you'd benefit from the exchange. But there must be something. Always is."

"I don't benefit, other than seeing that where you've been wronged has been put right," he told her.

She smiled. "Do you know any Latin, Jack?" she asked. "I see someone and I think 'Cui bono'. To whose benefit or who profits?
I don't even know if what he did was wrong. Freaked the hell out of me, that unnaturally quick lunatic bastard. I certainly didn't enjoy it. But he wanted something and he took it. You can't expect other people to look out for your interest. In a sense it can be considered my fault. I wasn't able to protect myself."
She was still mad about that. She should have been able to handle it. Somehow...She still couldn't figure out what she should have done differently. That guy was just a monster. He was stronger and faster. And he hadn't given her enough time to deal with her restraints.

"Well then, ego mos tutela vos," he told her, "I will safeguard you. I will protect you."

She sized Jack up. "I'm pretty fast and pretty slick. Definitely not strong but quick. But this guy was something else. I doubt you could take him either." She looked him up and down again. "Yeah, I'm probably at least as fast as you."
She smiled. "Glad you know at least a little Latin, though. Lovely language."

"I'm a man of culture, beauty is important. Painting, pottery, Latin. You should see my work sometime," he offered.

"I do enjoy good artwork," she admitted. Her personal tastes typically did factor into her thief work a bit. How secure it was, was the top priority but she did prefer to take things she actually found pleasing. She wondered if Jack knew she was a thief. She wasn't exactly sure what the organization had told her teammates about her if anything.
"What other languages do you know? Greek too?" she asked curiously. Also a pretty language.

"Some," he said, "Primarily Latin, offhand. Greek I can reference easily enough whenever I need it, which isn't often," he told her.

"I got my degree in Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies," she explained. "We were required to take at least one dead language but people were certainly more impressed if you took more." Not like that's why she had done it. "Of course I didn't care about that. But I thought the ancient myths might hold some secrets. And it's always better if you can read them in their original text."
She smirked. "If you want to be cultured I'd definitely recommend learning more Greek. They had some pretty impressive stuff."

"It's just the language I haven't taken up," he said, "Architecture, art, all of that was important. The language? Not so much." He smiled, "All of what you've done sounds impressive. We should do some more work together."

"Studied topography too," she said animatedly. She really did enjoy discussing her work.
"Typically ancient treasures have been buried for a while. If you pour over the myths and get a general idea of where you think something might have originally been located and then reference maps to determine how the landscape/Earth's surface has changed since then you can significantly hedge your bets."
"For my end of the work language is really important. You don't want to rely on poor translations! And I am on your team. This.." She waved her arms. "This treasure hunting is my dream. I'm definitely not going anywhere else by choice."
