"That's better." Vera smiled, even though Kayla couldn't see it. They emerged into an alley behind the hotel, and a trooper pulled up with a van. Vera carried Kayla inside and sat her down, spreading her skirt out to sit down across from her. The van began to drive, and Vera absentmindedly admired the single boot Kayla's legs were in.

Vera grabbed Kayla's chin and turned her head back. She forgot what she needed to fix that, but it would be fine for now.
