The scale had been destroyed...all those years, all of that research. It was all gone, pointless now. Kayla wasn't sure what to be doing with herself now. She didn't want to go back and tell her father. She didn't want to return home. She just wanted to stay in France and...and hide her shame. It was her fault...

There was a rather distinctive rustling noise nearby. "My, fancy meeting you here, darling." Vera said, her face twisted into a smile that looked more at home on the face of a serial killer. She moved her hips just enough to keep her skirt moving about. |

Kayla turned to look, not placing the voice right away, but then it clicked.
"Vera?" she questioned, shaking her head a bit, "Go away. I need to be alone right now."

Vera disappeared in an alleyway, reappearing a moment later next to Kayla. "You really should wear dresses more often. You're too pretty to be wasted on such plain clothing."

She turned to say something, but her foot slipped on her next step as some loose gravel slid under her boot. She regained her balance, stopped, and then ignored her and walked on.
