Yes, Erika knew better than to take anyone's words at face value. Appear cheerful and cooperative but be skeptical, question everything. She grew excited when he offered to teach her.
"Really?!" she asked eagerly. "You'd be willing to teach me magic?" she breathed. And he had books about her powers she could access?! She didn't have any of her own! "I'd love to learn from you," she said without hesitation.
She chuckled. "I'll just have to be careful that you don't take advantage of me without my knowledge or consent." But she needed to know more about her powers so she could control them. Knowledge itself was pure. It could be used for either good or evil. Even if this mage was evil, and she wasn't convinced he was, that didn't mean she'd have to abuse whatever he taught her.

David could hardly contain his glee. He had taken a Magiranger as his...what to call her? Apprentice? Not quite...student? Perhaps. Either way he needed to prove to her that he was someone to be trusted as he nodded, "Of course...I will not take advantage of your powers, I know what kind of power it is and to be quite honest I never did believe that seeing the future is any good. I'm sure you agree with me that there are times where seeing the future scares you correct?" he remarked to the girl.

Erika rolled her eyes again. He had just praised her for being skeptical of what people said. She would have to see for herself if he'd use or manipulate her.
She tensed when he made his comments about seeing the future. It always scared her. Even when she poured into her crystal ball to clarify visions or provoke them...She loathed it. She could only see dark, terrible things, the worst possible outcomes. She used her crystal ball out of obligation, a sense of responsibility, not because it was something she enjoyed.
"I'll see for myself if you'll take advantage," she said anxiously, not sure quite how honest to be about how much his remarks about her powers stung.
"I try to use my visions to protect people," she finally said softly. She detested her visions, especially since the strongest ones induced seizures and what she saw...It was enough to drive anyone mad but...It didn't have to be dark, right? It was for a good purpose, right? It was used for her to help others, protect them.

David did not say anything about not taking advantage of her, she was smart enough to know that such words would not make her trust him anymore than normal. However he knew that he had hit a nerve with the fear of seeing the future, seers that were untrained had historically gone mad from the visions that they saw, some still went insane even with training. It just depended on the willpower of the person on whether or not they would be able to deal with the powers given to them, "Of course, that is a noble thing to do, to use it to save people, I am sure once you have been trained that you will be able to see who needs help," he said, "perhaps you could even use these visions to change the future itself."

The goal was of course to use her visions to alter the future. However...Her success rates weren't too fantastic.
"Yes, I want to be able to actually spare people from the disasters I see," she said sadly. When she tried to warn people, most just assumed she was crazy. And subtlety wasn't always enough to steer them away. And sometimes she couldn't tell just where her visions were occurring.
"Um...I really would love to learn from you but can you please keep it a secret from Mr. Waynguard? He's really insistent that you're evil and dangerous. He wouldn't be pleased. And he doesn't exactly share my view point that knowledge is pure. He thinks that's dangerous thinking."

David nodded, even mages were not quite admitting that something bad was going to happen to them if a random person warned them, the powers of the future and seers were sadly underestimated and most seers were called insane or crazy. They could not understand the pure power that a seer had; instead more interestted in what they could touch and see. Magic wasn't something that could be touched and seen: it had to be felt, it had to be harnessed within a person. A true mage would be able to see that, "I am sorry to hear that, but other than telling people what would happen there is also the path of changing the thing that causes the disaster. For example if a person is about to be injured due to a car accident then one would simply have to disable the car so that they would not be able to use the car hence averting the disaster," David said.
He nodded again. The man was a light wizard and could no doubt see through him. But as long as he kept quiet about it and the girl kept quite he would be able to teach her things the man would not be able to do, "Of course I completely understand," he said, "people think that knowledge can be harnessed and once you know something that's all you should know: they hardly do any further research on it or see what potentials can be derived from even the most simplest of spells. It is a sad era indeed where magic is simply something for show and not used to further noble causes," he said with a sigh and a shake of his head.

Erika nodded. "I can't remember a time before I had visions. At first I didn't even know they were premonitions. But what I saw happened. Then I tried directly warning people and they thought I was crazy or at best playing some game. I've tried to prevent what I see from occurring through other means like you say but...It can be really complicated. There are connections that are impossible to trace. Sometimes...Sometimes my interference caused my visions to come true," she admitted, ashamed.
"I don't want to be like that!" she insisted. "There are so many different uses for even the simplest of spells like you say! I want to study the craft of magic so I can do some real good but it's more than that! I simply want to know! I just...I love learning! I want to know as much as possible!"
"Oh! And I wanted to thank you for showing me the spell from before!" She had only seen him use the spell once but she had been interested and she had a good memory. She'd been practicing. She repeated the spell he uttered and a small flame bird erupted out of thin air as it flew up and squawked before vanishing.
She grinned at her success. "Oh and I tried tampering with it a bit." She said something similar but slightly different. This was more natural to her as she was drawing upon her water elements. Instead of a flame bird erupting a water bird emerged and squawked. This bird didn't vanish right away but came and perched on her shoulder. It was water. She could contain this form much longer than the flame one.
"I'll try my hardest to be an apt student," she promised.

"That is indeed the trouble with seers, they can't see the full picture. They only see snippets of it, there are records where a seer attempts to intervene in an event and unknowingly causes the event to occur because of that interference. I will not lie to you, it will be difficult to fully control your powers, however I will do my best to teach you how to control your magic at the very least so that you do not go out of control. Learning is the greatest joy a person can do, by learning you are able to apply various things to another thing, create new concepts that people might not know before, even perhaps create something that would put your name in magical history," David said.
He was surprised when the girl was able to derive from his flame bird and create a water bird as he nodded and clapped his hand approvingly, "You have much potential, very big potential, and you will do very well under my tutelage," he said.

Erika had done that. She had caused several of her visions to occur by her act of trying to prevent them. Such terrible destruction. She had been so depressed afterwards. It had been a struggle just to continue. And she was still plagued with visions and premonitions.
"I know it won't be easy," she said softly. "I'm been trying to control them all my life with only limited success," she painfully acknowledged. "Any help would be greatly appreciated."
She didn't care about the fame. She just wanted to learn. She brightened. "You think I might be able to create something?!" She would love to make something herself, something used to help others.
She beamed when he clapped, pleased with the praise. "Thank you!" she said gratefully.
She wondered if it would be showing off too much but she had been playing with the spell and she did want to show her future teacher what she could do. "I thought the birds could be really useful. They don't have to be just decorations. What if they could deliver messages? Messages that could only be delivered to the proper recipient and disappear afterwards?"
She was glad the water bird was with her. It was much easier with the water one. She touched the bird. As it was water her gloved fingers went partially through it. She whispered a few words, imprinting and image an a message.
The bird flew over to the mage and landed on his shoulder, confirming his identity. Then it broke into droplets of water and rained down upon the ground forming letters. "Thank you for agreeing to teach me magic. Maybe with this we can communicate without Mr. Waynguard's knowledge." The letters stayed in place long enough for the mage to read and then evaporated.
She smiled at her success. It had taken hours of tinkering to receive the desired effect, even with water being involved. But she had been determined to make it work. And she'd finally been properly taught a spell after all this time. She wanted to play with it as much as possible. Yes, she was starving for proper lessons.

"Of course you can create something, the greatest notable names of the magical history has created something. Magical styles, golems, artefacts...all of them had been created due to the skill of mages, mages like yourself," David said, "and of course that simple spell you made could be used to deliver messages. There are several spells that are used solely for the usage of delivering a message," David said as he saw the girl form some messages as he nodded approvingly.

Good. He didn't seem to think she was showing off. She listened eagerly to what he was saying.
"What about you?" she asked excitedly. "Are you trying to make something? And I hope it's okay that I kept playing with the spell. It's just...That was the first spell anyone ever taught me and I wanted to manipulate it a bit! Oh and um...What should I call you? I don't believe I've heard your name yet!"

"I have not yet decided what I shall research...it takes time for a mage to determine what they would research, it is not as easy as your simple school assignment," David said and he nodded, "I encourage you to explore every potential there is. Magic is something to be explored not condensed in a book or manual, it should be explored until every path has been exhausted. Never let go of your goal or ambition, because it is that very thing that will allow you to succeed as a mage. And my name is David McKinnon, and yours?"

Erika beamed. She had wondered if he would give her a name. Some people were really secretive about their own. "I'm Erika Danielles," she responded. He was going to be her teacher. He at least deserved a name.
She was happy that Mr. McKinnon encouraged exploration. Mr. Waynguard definitely seemed more guarded about playing with magic. And he was so closed minded about magic's neutrality! And he thought religion helped with morals?! Did he ever read about the great crusades?!
"I wanted to ask you though..Magic does seem easier if you use incantations but it doesn't always seem necessary. I'm good at manipulating water. Depending upon the complexity I can manipulate its forms and summon it without really saying anything. And I've noticed that my visions are usually stronger when I'm surrounded by water. Do you have any idea why that is?"

"A pleasure Miss Danielles," David said before Erika asked him a question as he smiled knowing that he could impart something to the girl. "The fact that you are able to use water effectively is most likely because your magical nature, sort of like your talent, is attuned to the element of water. All mages have different natures and elements that they are naturally atuned to, for example mine is fire hence why I was able to create that fire bird easily, others would be able to do the same but it requires much more concentration. In relation to that your visions become stronger when you are surrounded by water is again because of your natural affinity to water, of course in time if one is highly skilled they would be able to cast magic without an incantation for their natural element," he explained.

She was surprised Mr. McKinnon was calling her Miss Danielles. She was so much younger than him and she was going to be his student. Or maybe she already was his student? He was already instructing her.
"Summoning the fire bird was really hard," she admitted. "It was much easier to manipulate the spell once I figured out how to make it a water bird."
She pondered. "Will it be difficult to teach me because my affinity is counter to your own?" she asked.
"Oh and thank you for your explanation! It makes a lot of sense."
Again she was confused. "But before I got my MagiPhone or was properly instructed in magic I was able to 'play with water' without using any incantations or specific spells." What was she saying, properly instructed with magic? Technically she hadn't had a real lesson yet.
