Son of a bitch! Nothing was going his way today! He'd already lost three humans and now the girl was tainted with Horror blood, as good as dead. Worse still he'd have to be the one to end her life. Jun couldn't focus on that now, though. The Horror was weakened but not yet dead. And Jun had less than 99 seconds to deal with it. After that, he couldn't use his armor.
Jun extracted his spear and lit it on fire with his Madou Lighter. The purple flames quickly covered every inch of his Double-headed Midnight Sun Spear. He moved to stab the beast again.

The Horror howled and burned, evaporating from the purple flames. The beast was dead, and Rui was with the corpses of her family, no longer paying any attention to the fight.

Jun's armor and horse disappeared. Normally now would be the time for him to relax. His posture would become much less rigid and he'd walk off to perform mundane magic tricks or do something equally as trivial as his partner coined it. But not now. He really didn't want to deal with this again. But he didn't make the rules. He simply followed them. And if he didn't kill this girl, she'd die a miserable death in 100 days anyway. Still...Why did he have to be the one to do this?
He approached the girl. "I'm sorry," he said simply. His voice appeared somewhat cold and detached despite the fact that he really was upset.

She didn't pay any attention to him. She was too lost with her family, too broken to hear anyone or realize anything that was happening around her.

It wasn't surprising that she couldn't cope. She'd just watched her family be devoured by a Horror. Should he strike her down now before she was aware? No, that seemed too cruel. He should at least ask her if there was something she wanted him to take care of. Here he'd thought she'd had more of a future than him. But no, as controlled and restricted as Jun's future was, he still had more time.
What was he supposed to do when people were in shock? He looked around the shop, trying to find a blanket to drape over her shoulders. No such luck. Instead he took off his coat and placed it around her, simply waiting for her to come to her senses. He supposed there was no hurry.

She became cognizant of her surroundings when the coat was placed on her shoulders. She slowly turned to look at Jun, tears running down her cheeks.
"W...what was that...?" she questioned, her voice shaking, "Why did...why did they have to die...?"

Oh shit. The questions. He felt like he was the worse knight in the world to answer them. He just tried to play it easy and casual outside of combat. That obviously wasn't going to work here.
"That was a Horror," he began slowly. "Also known as Inga-Horrors. They're monsters or rather demons that are attracted to the darkness inside human beings. They take control of a person, essentially destroying them most of the time, and then they devour other people," he explained.
He sighed. "I suppose they died because I wasn't strong enough to protect them. I'm sorry." Guilt. He really hated it. Being a Makai Knight was enough trouble without this distasteful emotion.

She came up on trembling legs, "You...you weren't strong enough to protect them...?" she questioned. Was it his duty to kill these things, then? To protect human lives? Her family was dead! This was his job!
She slammed her fists into his chest, "You killed them!" she screamed at him.

He simply stood there and let her punch him. It would have been easy to dodge or grab her hands but he didn't. Rui deserved this much. He had let her family die. He had let her die. He had completely failed in his duty as a Makai Knight.
He said nothing. What could he say? Sorry wasn't anywhere near good enough. And in a sense he had killed them. Rui was right. It had been his job to protect them and he hadn't lived up to those expectations.

She was rational enough to know that hitting him was pointless. She walked away from him and fell to her knees by her family's corpses, dropping her head to the floor and falling completely as she cried.

Jun wondered if he should tell her now that she was as good as dead too or if he should wait and give her a moment to grieve. Was there any point in putting off the news? But...It didn't seem decent to give her more bad news when she was sobbing like this. He simply watched her for the moment. He'd tell her when her eyes were more dry. Although he did somewhat wonder what the point in waiting was. He'd probably just make her cry again.

The shop door was unsealed and Rian stepped inside. She dodged around them as quickly as she could and got to Jun's side.
"What happened?" she asked softly, looking at them. She could guess, but she wanted to ask anyway. Her heart went out to the girl. She pulled out her Madou Brush, ready to erase her memories and ease her of her suffering.

Great. Now he had to report his complete failure. "A Horror came here. It devoured that girl's family and tainted her with its blood," he stated in as calm a tone as possible. He did sound pretty indifferent. He wasn't though. He'd have to kill another human. Even if it was a mercy killing, even if it was a rule he hadn't made but needed to follow, it still sucked.

She hesitated. Tainted with blood? No... "I...I guess I'll leave you to it," she said, lowering her Brush, "I don't need to wipe her memories...unless you'd rather me do that, to help ease her pain a little?" she asked.

Jun shook his head. He hated being controlled. He'd understood from the moment he could speak that his whole destiny was already completely laid out and planned. He had absolutely no say in the matter. He went along with it because really...What else could he do? But he was still a bit bitter about it. And what was more controlling than a memory wipe? If Rui wanted to forget and chose that for herself that was one thing. But he wouldn't force that on her.
"I'll take care of this," he assured the priestess. "You don't need to be here," he added. It was his mistake. She shouldn't have to watch and pay for Jun's failure.
