Of course she was panicking. That was only to be expected. No one liked to be told their life was over. Jun didn't step back with her. He was faster. When he was ready there was no question he could kill her with ease. And he had seen that the priestess was blocking the door. He wished she didn't need to listen but it couldn't be helped. He supposed she had her own obligations.
"Listen to me, Rui. Essentially, you're already dead. Remember before when I told you guys to make sure you didn't touch anything that came from that Horror? Well you were splattered with its blood. Do you know what that means?" Well that was a stupid question. Of course she didn't know what that meant.
"At most a human who has been tainted with Horror blood can only live for 100 days. And they die in agony, screaming like a beast. It's...It's a really horrible death. Trust me, you wouldn't want to die that way. It's best if I just end it for you now. But first I want to know if there's anything you want me to take care of. Give me your request and I'll do my best to see it fulfilled."
That was a lot to take in. Would she get even half of it? Well it was probably best to explain it all in one large dose and go back over the information as needed. Today really hard core sucked.

Rian bit her lip while she watched. This girl was so young... She lifted her Brush and didn't think about it. She focused and unleashed a spell, striking Rui in the chest. Rui collapsed before she could say anything, or even really take in what Jun had said to her. She hit the ground, unconscious.

Jun turned to stare at the priestess. "You wiped her memories?" he asked. It was more of statement than a question. That was cruel, taking her memories away when she'd already lost so much. He walked over to the collapsed girl. He wouldn't kill her like this. That would be unfair. He needed to at least see if there was anything she needed to see finished.

"I know what the Makai Law states," Rian told him, "But everything is in chaos. OROCHI has destroyed the Order, there aren't many of us left...we're not in a good position anymore, not by any means. I don't want you to have to kill this girl," she told Jun, "Let her live...at least for a time. Cut her down before the blood gets to her, but let her live. For now."

Jun looked at the priestess, relieved. He didn't want to kill Rui either. And she had some sort of authority in the Order, right? So she was...giving him new orders? He shook his head. No, he couldn't delude himself like that. She didn't have the authority to override the law like this. But he really didn't want to kill another human. Damn order political bullshit.
Jun looked to his partner, Uriel. "Uriel, I'm still following the law as long as I kill her before the blood gets to her, right?" "You know Horrors will be drawn to her like bees to honey, right? Are you willing to take responsibility?" Jun grinned wryly. "What do Makai Knights do besides take responsibility?"
He didn't wait for an answer but turned back to the priestess. "How much did you erase?" he asked.

"I erased what happened here today, and I targeted the memories of her family. I didn't want to remove them, but...she's an orphan now. She'll think she's always been one. She has no family left in this life, nor in her memories..." She didn't want to do it, but how else would she relieve Rui of this pain?
"Oh...Jun...have you ever fought another Knight?" she asked, "A Priest? Priestess?"

Jun looked at the priestess incredulously. She had completely rewritten her memories?! That was so messed up! "Can you put them back?! I'm sure she wouldn't want to forget her family, all those experiences that shaped her life!" He wasn't going to dignify her questions with a response right now. How could she rewrite Rui's whole history without permission like that?!

"She's still the same person she always was, just with those memories rewritten about her family." She didn't answer the rest...she could put them back, but it was difficult. She looked at the girl, "We might have to mercy kill her sooner, though. With the rogues no doubt coming, and now her being a Horror magnet..."

Jun grabbed Rian's hand. "Please! Put her memories back! How would you feel if you learned that someone had rewritten your entire history?! Because of me she already lost her parents and most of her life! The least we can do is keep her memories more or less in tact!"

"The best we can do is spare her of as much pain as possible," Rian told him. She tore her hand away and crouched by Rui, "She'll wake soon," she looked up at Jun, "For all we know, we'll all be dead soon anyway."

Jun tried to calm himself. It wasn't like him to get so worked up anyway. If Rian wouldn't restore Riu's memories of her own volition there was no way Jun could force her. He couldn't work magic the way a priestess could.
"Right...So she's going to wake up and she'll have no idea who we are. So...We're going to explain ourselves how?" he asked, trying to think up an answer.
He grinned at Rian, trying to restore some levity. "And as for your earlier question. Nope. I've never fought another knight or priest or priestess. But I suppose that will have to change now." "Jun, you realize you'll have to work a lot of 'overtime' as you put it, right?" Uriel asked. Jun shrugged helplessly. "What can I do?" If there was an alternative to cutting down Rui right now he'd take it. He didn't want to kill her.

Rui was slowly starting to stir. Rian looked at Jun, smiled, and quickly went to the door. She used her Brush to make the corpses vanish, and remove the signs of damage, and then left the building.
Rui slowly came up, the coat sliding off of her. She looked at Jun, "Um...what's...what's going on?" she asked, "Who are you?"

Oh fantastic! Rian had vanished and left Jun to deal with the mess! Well, he supposed that was only fair. This was kind of his responsibility. He was taking advantage of a loop hole and keeping Riu alive. And he needed to figure out how he could stay close to her.
Jun rushed to Riu's side. "You shouldn't get up so quickly!" he insisted. "You just passed out! How are you feeling?!" he asked with concern.

"I'm...I'm fine...," she said, "I feel a little dizzy..." She tried to get up, and came to her knees. She looked at Jun again, "Were you passing by?"

Jun put a hand on Riu's shoulder to steady her. "Easy now," he cautioned. "You're still probably a little faint." Just passing by? Yeah...That was one way of putting it.
"Actually I'm new in town. I came here hoping to find work or learn of a place I could at least spend the night. See, I just came here today," he said with a hopeless smile. Well the just coming here today part was true.
He'd need to keep a very close eye on Riu. It would be easier if he could form some sort of association with her through part time work or stay at a place near her. Damn, Uriel was right. This was going to be a lot of overtime. Especially if he was going to get a part time job. But it probably wouldn't be that easy. Who'd hire a complete stranger even if they needed extra help?
