"You're just going to cut her down, then?" Rian asked. She looked at the younger girl. She had no idea what she'd do in his position; it seemed like a memory wipe might be less cruel, and then to cut her down. Let her die with less negative emotion, rather than cut her down while she was at her lowest.
But Rian wasn't a Knight.

"That will be the end result," Jun acknowledged. "But first I'm going to make sure she understands and see if there's any affairs she wants me to take care of." That wasn't against any of the rules and he owed her that much.

Rian nodded, "As you wish. I am here if you have need of me," she told him.

"Thank you," he said politely. "But I think it would be best for everyone if you waited outside. You don't need to see this. This is my responsibility." Being a Makai Knight was filled with far too many obligations but well...what could you do?

She nodded, not asking any questions. She slipped past the grieving girl and stood outside.

Jun reluctantly walked over to Rui. He really dreaded what came next but this was a part of his job too. He waited to see if she would speak to him. If not...He'd really need to broach the subject. Was there anything good that came out of being a Makai Knight?!

She wasn't aware of what was going on, she was just in tears, mourning her family.

Great. She was still crying! He couldn't tell her now! She needed to calm down at least a little bit first. He'd already given her his coat. Was there anything else he could do to help? Let's see...Shock victims were typically given a blanket and a warm drink. Even if they couldn't drink it the warmth itself could be calming.
Shops like this typically had a coffee maker or something. He poked around, keeping a careful eye on Rui, making sure she didn't leave. He need not have bothered. For all intensive purposes she was dead to the world.
He eventually returned to Rui's side with a steaming mug. He reached for her hands and cupped them around the mug. He didn't let go right away. He needed to make sure she was aware enough to hold onto it. The warmth wouldn't have time to do any good if she instantly dropped the mug.

She looked up at him when he gave her the mug. She didn't want to throw it, or drop it, but she didn't want it. "I don't want you...," she told him, "I..." What did she want? She looked at her family. Why...why them? Why couldn't she have died as well? Why was she still alive?

"You don't need to drink it," he assured her. "Just please hold onto it. The warmth should help." He wished his voice was more comforting. In his line of work a certain level of apathy and indifference was really helpful. It enabled a knight to keep a cool head and do what was necessary. But in situations like this he doubted a somewhat cold voice was desirable.

Her trembling hands kept grip on it, but she didn't want it. She was out of things to say to him, and then she looked down, dropping tears into the glass.
"What good is warmth?" she questioned, "What...what good is it?"

He didn't know if she expected an answer. He didn't know if he could give one. "I suppose...It's not really a matter of what's good but what's necessary."

"Necessary?" she questioned.
Rian watched from a window. She probably had to involve herself again.

"Your body needs certain things even if your mind doesn't want them. And people have certain obligations even if they aren't good." He took a deep breath. She was calmer now. He couldn't put this off forever. "I need to do something terrible," he confessed. "Rui, I need to kill you."

She dropped the mug and backed away from him, "You...you what?" she questioned. He was armed, he had killed that demon thing...there was no question that she could kill him. But...no. No! She didn't want him to kill her!
Rian silently entered again and stayed at the door, watching. She didn't want to, but...
