"That's not right," she said, "You should be able to do what you want, not what you're told."

Jun grinned wryly. He doubted she would say that if she knew what his job was.
He shrugged carelessly. "It wasn't exactly that simple. He thought I had potential and had the ability to do a lot of good in his line of work. And he was right. He was just always disappointed with my lack of dedication. My father was very driven but I never wanted his work, his life."

"What was that work?" she asked, "But you don't have to tell me if you don't want..." He didn't want that life, after all, so maybe he wouldn't want to tell her about any of it.

"He was a police officer," he lied without hesitation. He supposed that was the closest he could get to explaining the truth without actually bringing up Knights and Horrors. "So he wasn't exactly wrong. He just wanted me to continue the proud family tradition of protecting innocent people. But it was just...always frustrating, feeling that I didn't really have a say in my future."

"A police officer is a good job to have," she said, "You get to protect people and serve your community. I'm sure you would have done a fine job as one."

Yeah...He was probably the least dedicated Makai Knight in existence. Tonight he'd let three people be devoured and another one become tainted with Horror blood. Admittedly, today was a bad day. He was usually much better at protecting people. Still...He definitely hadn't been a good knight today. And as much as he begrudged his work, he did want to complete his missions properly. He wanted to bring honor to his family. What else was there for a Makai Knight?
He simply shrugged, really not wanting to think about his work right now and his horrible failure. "What about you? Do you like running the flower shop?" he asked, changing the subject.

"I wouldn't call it 'running'," she said, "I'm just usually the only one working. But I love it," she told him, turning and looking at the flowers arranged beside the counter, "They're all so beautiful, after all."

"They are very beautiful," he agreed. He liked watching people's faces light up when he used flowers in his tricks. He almost envied Rui-chan. She was happy with what she was doing. She seemed to actually like her life. But that life was rapidly coming to an end. Because of him. How could he possibly be jealous of someone with only 100 days to live? And someone who had cruelly had their memories stolen on top of that? She certainly wouldn't be smiling if she remembered what had happened to her family.

Rui looked at the clock on the wall, "My shift is over," she said, coming out from behind the counter, "I need to lock up, and then I'll show you where you'll be staying."

Jun followed behind her. "Again, thank you. I really appreciate your help and I promise to do everything I can to help you in return!"
Uriel could sense Horrors. He'd talk to his partner later and see if he could detect the Horror blood within Rui-chan. Although he'd be able to keep a pretty close eye on her staying at her place, he would need to leave to do his Makai work at times. But he needed to always be vigilant. Not only would other Horrors want her but other Knights might try and kill her too. What a mess.

"Thank you for being willing to help," she said. She didn't know why she trusted him so readily, but she did, and that's what mattered. She looked forward to having him, to having someone fill up some of the emptiness in her home.

Jun laughed. "It's the least I can do to say thank you!" he insisted. He wondered why she trusted him so much. Was that her nature? She really shouldn't. He would be the one to kill her.
He contemplated what it would be like to share a place with someone else. He'd lived alone ever since his father had died.

"So...you just arrived in Vol City, I guess?" she asked him as she locked up and left with him.

"Yes. I was here for less than half an hour before I went to your flower shop," he said truthfully. Uriel had noticed the Horror presence pretty quickly. His partner was good for that.

"And what brought you to this shop?" she asked curiously.
