She smiled. "Some Book of Five Rings. Some In the Leaves of Shadows. And some other Japanese philosophers." She laughed. "Although some is my own. Still, why not borrow from wise men?"

He shrugged, "I don't know how fitting it is for you."

"Because I'm a woman?" she asked, not at all offended.

"No," he said, "It just doesn't seem fitting for you."

"What do you mean by that?" she asked him. She lived by those verses. How strange it was for him to say that it wasn't fitting.

"Granted, I don't know much about you, but just this little bit makes me think it's unsuited for you."

"Just what is this 'little bit'?" She was really curious. Why would he find this odd? It was who she was.

"Just these few minutes of talking," he told her, explaining that.

"Care to elaborate?" She was very baffled by his comment. How could he not see how well they fit her?

"It's just how I see you, I can't really explain it," he said.

"Well a rock is a rock even if you call it a stick. They fit me regardless of whether or not you can understand why."

"If you say so...," he muttered. "I don't know anything about you, so I don't know that."

She didn't both to comment on the 'if you say so'. If he wasn't convinced her words alone wouldn't be enough. But Sayuri knew who she was. she didn't need a stranger to give her confidence.
"And I know little about you; but, it is not true you know nothing about me. You can learn much from watching how people fight."

"That is true," he told her. Combat said a lot about a person, but there was a clear difference between learning through combat and learning about a person otherwise. "In our types of lives, combat and who we are are two separate things. You can learn about me through battle, but that's completely different than learning about me as a person."

Two separate things? It was true you had to have a civilian life as well as a warrior life but a warrior was always a warrior. A warrior in a civilian state was like a warrior asleep. But the code should still be the same. A warrior should strive to be just and well balanced in everything they did.
"Would you honor me with a visit to my home? I would like to make you tea and properly thank you for your assistance. And then perhaps I can learn more about you as a person."
Such a strange phrase. It was as if he thought a warrior was not a person. But then maybe he wasn't completely wrong. Maybe they were something more.
