She nodded. "Yeah, that hasn't been going so well. That's why I need to change my strategy!" Sayuri said all business like, trying to come up with a plan.
"Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat," she quoted.
"If you know your enemy and know yourself, you will not be imperilled by a hundred battles. If you do not know the others but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one. If you do not know the enemy and do not know yourselves you will be in danger in every battle."
She turned to Marilen. "So basically, I need to understand Kiriha better! Please can you tell me a little bit about him?" she asked.

"Well, he's cocky, full of himself, arrogant, like you know. He has a good heart, though. He wants to save lives, and he's doing this for that reason. We're rich, he attends social functions, I don't think he particularly enjoys them, but our father makes him go. Me, I avoid them," she said, "Um...recently he's become a lot colder, I don't know what that's about, though."

Sayuri listened attentively. She did have to agree that he had a good heart even if he could act like a jerk. After all he was both a warrior fighting to protect the innocent and a doctor trying to save lives.
She knew why he was acting colder. Someone had forced a weird power inside of him. Why would someone do that? It wasn't fair. Sayuri had been trained from a young age to be a warrior. She knew ever since she could speak that she would become a samurai to protect the people. She had been raised for this. It wasn't right to push all that responsibility on someone without any instruction or preparation.
"Is he close to your father?" Sayuri asked. Maybe that was why he went. If her own father asked her to do something, no matter how much she hated it she would comply. She loved her father dearly.

"I don't know how close," she said, "But he does what he's asked of, for the most part. I don't. I'm not living at home either, so I really don't know what their relationship is like."

"Does Kiriha live with your father?" she asked. It would be sad if he lived with him, they weren't close, and he still did whatever he asked.

She nodded, "He lives with his father and my mother. I moved out, I had no interest in the life our father wanted for me," she said.

"Does Kiriha have an interest or is it just a sense of responsibility?"

"Probably more responsibility than interest," she said.

Well that certainly was tricky. Familial duties were certainly important but Kiriha was a warrior. A warrior needed to put their warrior responsibilities over everything else. And he was a doctor too. He shouldn't be concerning himself with other things.
"Perhaps I'm not the only one who needs to be more bold. If he doesn't want a part of that life he should cut a new path for himself. If your parents are good people they'll understand and continue to love him. And if they're not, they really weren't worthy of being called parents to begin with. A parent's job is to support their child and ensure their happiness."

She shook her head, "Our father pretty much refuses to talk to me at this point," she said, "I lack our family money. Kiriha does what he's asked so that he can continue on this path."

"Training to be a doctor is expensive," she acknowledged. "But it's cruel for your father to manipulate him in that way. That's not what a good parent does. Disgusting," she said with completely disdain. She really loathed people who didn't take their parental responsibilities seriously. She'd met more than she'd like, teaching kindergarten.

"He wants our family name to continue on as a powerful and respected one," she told Sayuri, "So that's why he forces these things."

"It's good to be respected but how the world views your family is of little consequence if the bonds between the family are brittle and broken. A family should be united. It should protect its own because not everyone else will."
So maybe this was why Kiriha could be less than pleasant at times. Perhaps deep down he was bitter about his family relations. Unfortunate. A family should be a thing of strength and great support.

"Yeah, I'd agree with that," she told Sayuri, "Not our father, on the other hand..."

"Your father is no father," she said with cold, quiet, anger.
