Zeoul regarded the priestess. "I only wish he was being condescending," he said wryly. "Then he wouldn't cause so much trouble for himself. But no, as clever as he in other respects, he actually does somehow believe what he preaches."
"Zeoul you can't honestly think..."
"Please don't drag me into your delusions again Arata. I'm in enough trouble with the Order just being associated with you. Unfortunately I share your self inflicted isolation."
"It's not self inflicted! I'm just trying to improve these immoral laws!" Arata argued. "You know the end result. You open your mouth knowing full well how your words will be received. Therefore it's self inflicted."

"An organization as old the Makai Order doesn't take kindly to challenges on the way they've done things. Tradition and the modern concept of morality clash, and you need to accept that." Garou said. "But something tells me you won't."

Zeoul smiled at the priestess. "Someone else who finally talks sense. I've been trying to impress upon Arata the concept of political suicide. It's not so much a matter of right or wrong but acceptance and practicality. But no, I fear you're right. He hasn't listened to me yet in this respect," Zeoul acknowledged.
"If something's wrong we shouldn't just tolerate it! We should try and change it! We're knights! We're supposed to uphold justice!" Arata said devotedly.
"Knights are first and foremost supposed to protect the stability of this world. Like it or not tradition upholds this order and stability. Everyone has their part to play. There is a proper code and conduct to follow. Everyone knows what they're supposed to do," Zeoul countered.

"You would do well to listen to your Madougu. It seems to have considerably more sense than you."

"What is wrong with the two of you?!" Arata demanded. "If you're willing to concede that something may be wrong why are you so determined to bury your heads in the sand and not consider the matter further? Nothing will ever be changed if everyone sits back and says 'Well there's nothing I alone can do.' It's our responsibility to try and fix problems when we see them! I'm sure the creation of the Order itself was radical thinking at the time!"
"Desperation brings about change, Arata. Necessity is the mother of invention. Our system works and no one's starving. Therefore, you won't encourage anyone to fight against it. The only thing you'll accomplish is further alienation and more suicide missions. You're already labeled as a trouble maker and rebel rouser in Shizuoka. There are knights the Order would be...more okay with losing. At least at the moment you're in a new location. Hopefully rumors of your radical ideas have not reached this far. This is an opportunity for you to start over and be more accepting of the Order's ways. I suggest you make the most of it."

Akira began to stir, his eyes opened and he scowled when he saw Arata and Garou going at it.
"Could you kids keep it done? What's wrong with the Japanese youth of today," he shook his head while cleaning out his ear with his finger and flicking whatever he pulled out, "Don't you have any respect for your elders?"

"Oh I'm sorry!" Arata immediately apologized. "I was just excited to meet some new Order members! It was inconsiderate of me to try and wake you and to be so loud!" He hurried over to the man and extended a hand. "I"m Arata! It's so nice to meet another Makai knight! I hope I get to work with you in the future!" he said eagerly.

Akira eyed him suspiciously, keeping his hands to himself.
"Forgive me for sounding rude," he said, "but in my 30 plus years of being a Makai Knight, this is my first time meeting a foreign Knight."

"Oh no. Here we go!" Zeoul muttered. And here it had been going so well. Arata had finally moved away from his crazy political talk.
Arata frowned and dropped his hand. He bit his lip and eyes burned with fierce intensity. "I am Japanese!" he snapped. "I was born in Shizuoka and I know as much Japanese history as anyone!"

Akira scowled, "Did you just yell at me kid? Do you think I give a damn where you were born?! A Knight is a tool to slay Horrors, it doesn't matter where it was forged."

"If it doesn't matter where the tool was forged why bother to comment on the fact that you thought it wasn't created on Japanese soil?" he asked with an edgy tone, still clearly upset. "I am not a foreigner! I am as Japanese as you!"

"Again, don't yell at me boy!" he barked, "I can't help it if I was a little surprised at first!"

"Why should you be suspicious of me?!" he yelled back. "Are you racist?! You think that someone who doesn't fit your idea of what a Japanese person looks like needs to be watched like a hawk?!"
"Arata," Zeoul began tentatively. "Remember the discussion we had earlier about trying to get along with the other Knights?"
"Zeoul, shut up! I want to hear his answer!" Zeoul was a little bit surprised at Arata's harsh tone towards him. Even when they argued Arata was typically friendly enough. He supposed he shouldn't be too startled. Arata was really insecure about his mixed heritage. He got so worked up when someone commented on it. Not good.

Akira looked so pissed he was about to burst, but then he did something unexpected - he laughed before smacking Arata hard on the shoulder.
"I like your fiery spirit boy. It's refreshing after meeting so many dead-eyed Knights."

Arata looked stunned when Arika smacked him on the shoulder and complimented him. He just sort of stared back at the man surprised for a moment.
"Thank you," he said somewhat uncertainly before smiling. His natural state was friendly and cheerful. Now that the man was treating him with respect he was better.
"Let's try this again then. The name's Arata. Who are you?" He asked brightly.
