"Well, my art," he told her, "That's what's different. That's the love I return to."

"But it doesn't have to be here does it? Couldn't you paint anywhere?" she asked him. She could research anywhere.

"I've just grown attached to the faces I see around here, to the view...to everything."

She appreciated that Jack hadn't completely written her off and was trying to explain it to her. "So you have friends here?" she asked.

"I don't know about "friends"," he told her.

She beamed. She'd given up hope that she'd ever find someone who would admit to not having friends in the neighborhood. She still probably wouldn't find someone who admitted to having no friends period but neighborhood was a start.
"Well that's fine. I don't know why people are so insistent that you need friends or a boyfriend or some kind of relationship to make yourself happy. People are actually capable of making themselves happy!"

"They are," he agreed, "Though some of those other things really do help."

"I really wouldn't know. On several occasions I've considered trying to get friends or a boyfriend to see if that's true;but, it's never really worked out. It will probably always be a mystery to me."

"Well, I can be of help." He was slightly interested in her, she worked in his field, she was attractive, he'd acted on less than that before.

"Really?" she asked surprised. Usually by this point in a conversation pretty much everyone wrote her off as some emotionally traumatized nut. Not being emotionally invested in everything did not make her some kind of sociopath.

"Or rather, I'd show you affection," he said. Maybe 'boyfriend' wouldn't be the right way to put it, but he'd do some of those things for her.

Charlotte wasn't quite sure what he was talking about. Was he referring to a friend or boyfriend? In either case, it was definitely refreshing that he didn't view her as some emotionally traumatized person. Or if he did he wasn't so worried about it so as to write her off completely.
Never one to worry about how others viewed her, she honestly voiced her confusion. "What are you talking about?"

"That's up to you to decide," he told her. That would save him some trouble...

And she was still confused but that was nothing new. People often confused her. She didn't get most of their motivations or ways of viewing the world.
"Doesn't sound like you. You seem like more of an active than passive person." Charlotte wasn't sure what type she was. Really active when it came to her work. Probably passive for pretty much everything else minus stealing.

He shrugged, "See it how you wish," he left it at that.
