"See it how you wish?" she repeated distractedly. She knew it wasn't exactly what he'd been talking about but it made her think of her very depressing sketch. It was terrible and probably a lost cause but did that mean she needed to completely give up on it? Did she really need to go so far as to burn it?
She wondered over to it and looked at it again. Yeah...It still looked pretty awful. She had this epic vision in her head. One day would she be able to transcribe it to paper?
She walked back to Jack with her sketch, continuing to stare at it. "No, matter how I look at it, it's awful. But maybe somewhere there's potential."
She turned it face down. "I probably shouldn't be obsessing over it. I'm just really terrible at drawing."

"Everybody has their strengths, don't mind a single weakness," he told her.

"It's not so much the skill that bothers me. I haven't seriously tried. I just...I'm scared to give it my best effort. I just don't think it will be good enough. I know...It's really stupid."
As a child there'd been a single painting in her room. It was the one thing she really cared about. It was beautifully crafted and it was always there unlike her parents. Looking back, she'd probably invested way too much emotion in that thing. But the more she admired the painting the more scared she had been to try her hand at art. It had felt wrong to attempt. She couldn't possibly hope to be as good as the artist that had painted it.

"It's not stupid," he told her, "I think I can understand that. I'm not thinking anything less of you, even if you're not giving it your best effort."

"Well I did actually try with that one. But given that I haven't sketched anything non-map related in...I don't even remember how many years..That's to be expected.
And it is stupid. Realizing my potential is impossible as long as I'm scared and have this terrible attitude. I'm not quite sure how to fix it though." She wished she did.

"Ok...look," he said, putting his hands on her shoulders, "Tomorrow, I'll come and find you again, and I'll be able to help you some more. I need some time to think. Is that ok with you?"

She looked up gratefully at Jack and smiled. "Thank you. I'm sorry I'm at such a terrible starting point."

He shook his head, "No, it's fine. Don't worry about it."

"How long have you been painting?" she asked him. "I mean your stuff is really amazing! You must have been practicing for a long time."

"Years," he said, "I don't want to be rude, but I do need some time."

She laughed. "Direct is good." She stood up and collected her things, trying to figure out how she would get home. Normally her sense of direction was impeccable but the all nighter and the events before had taken their toll. She hadn't been focused enough to be completely confident in her ability to get back to her reference point. But it should be fine. She could ask someone for directions if she got really lost.

"Do you want a ride?" he asked, "At least back to the building?" To the building they had met up at. He wasn't sure how she had gotten there in the first place. Did she have a car there yet?

"Thank you! That would be great!" she said relieved. She lived pretty close to the building designated as the meeting place. Under normal circumstances she'd probably have driven there but she felt she had been too shaken up to drive safely so she had walked. She figured she couldn't mess up walking too badly.

"Bring the paintings you want as well, they're yours now."

Charlotte beamed. "Do you really mean that? Because I'm going to take as many as you let me!" she promised.
